Tax filing FAQ
Tax filing FAQ, from safety to self-employment tax
The questions filers ask most: is my financial data safe, do you really file with the IRS, can TaxFile handle 1099 and Schedule C, do I have to pay self-employment tax, and what does it cost. Here are clear, honest answers.
Is TaxFile safe with my financial information?
Yes. Your tax documents and financial information are protected with bank-level 256-bit encryption, both in transit and at rest. We practice data minimization, collecting only what is needed to prepare your return, and we never sell your data. Your information is used to prepare your return and nothing else.
Is this actual tax advice?
No. TaxFile is self-prepared tax software, not personalized tax, legal or accounting advice. The AI helps you prepare an accurate return and explains each figure in plain English, but it does not give advice tailored to your specific circumstances. Not tax advice. Review your return before filing. For complex situations, consult a CPA or tax professional.
Do you actually file with the IRS?
Yes. After you review and approve your return, TaxFile e-files it through an authorized IRS e-file provider for both your federal and state return. TaxFile never files silently, and it is not affiliated with the IRS. You approve every number before anything is transmitted.
Will I get a bigger refund?
TaxFile finds the deductions and credits you qualify for and prepares an accurate return, but we do not promise a guaranteed bigger refund. Your refund or balance due depends on your actual income, deductions and credits. We surface what you qualify for so you are less likely to leave money on the table, and we never make a guaranteed-refund claim.
Can it handle 1099, self-employment and Schedule C?
Yes. TaxFile is built for freelancers, contractors and the self-employed. It reads your 1099-NEC, 1099-K and 1099-MISC income, organizes your business expenses, prepares Schedule C, figures your self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and surfaces the write-offs you qualify for, all in the core flow.
What if I have never filed self-employment taxes before?
That is fine. TaxFile walks you through it. You upload your 1099s and any expense records or answer a few questions, and the AI prepares Schedule C and Schedule SE, explains your self-employment tax in plain English, and shows you what you may owe. You review everything before it is filed, and for a complicated first-year situation you can always consult a CPA.
Do I have to pay self-employment tax?
Generally, if your net earnings from self-employment are 400 dollars or more in a year, you owe self-employment tax, which covers Social Security and Medicare. It is reported on Schedule SE and is separate from your income tax. TaxFile figures this for you when you have 1099 or self-employment income. This is general information from self-prepared tax software, not personalized tax advice, so for your specific situation consult a CPA or tax professional.
How much does TaxFile cost?
TaxFile uses simple per-return pricing with no free plan. The Simple plan is 39 dollars for straightforward W-2 returns, Self-Employed is 89 dollars and is our most popular plan for freelancers, contractors and 1099 filers, and Business is 199 dollars for small business returns, with an Enterprise option for larger needs. State returns are an additional 19 dollars per state. Prices are in USD. See the pricing page for the full details.
Do I need to upload documents to try it?
No. The live preview on this site runs on sample data, so you can see exactly how TaxFile reads a form, finds deductions and prepares a return before you add anything of your own. Nothing you see in the preview is a real return, and you only add your documents when you are ready to file.
What about state returns?
TaxFile prepares your US state income tax return alongside your federal return, carrying your figures across so you are not entering the same numbers twice. State returns are an additional 19 dollars per state and are e-filed through an authorized IRS e-file provider once you approve them.
How is my data protected?
Your tax documents and financial information are encrypted with bank-level 256-bit encryption in transit and at rest. We minimize the data we collect, restrict access to it, use an authorized IRS e-file provider only to transmit your approved return, and never sell your data. You can read the full details in our privacy policy.
What if my tax situation is complex?
TaxFile handles a wide range of situations, including self-employment, 1099 income, small business returns and multiple states. That said, it is self-prepared tax software, not personalized advice. If your situation is unusual or complicated, for example major life changes, multi-state business or significant investments, consult a CPA or tax professional. You always review your return before filing.
Not tax advice. Review your return before filing. For complex situations, consult a CPA or tax professional.
