TurboTax Deluxe vs Premium Cost for Freelancers
Deluxe is $79 and Premium is $139, plus state on both. Deluxe covers Schedule C income only, so any freelancer with expenses, stock sales or a rental needs Premium. What each tier really costs and the cheaper route for a one-state Schedule C.

TurboTax Deluxe costs $79 federal and Premium costs $139 federal, with each state return charged on top of both. The $60 buys you the expense side of Schedule C, stock and crypto sales on Schedule D, rental income on Schedule E and the home office form. If you have W-2 income, a mortgage and some itemized deductions, Deluxe is enough. If you earn any 1099 income with expenses, sold investments or own a rental, you need Premium.

What is the difference between TurboTax Deluxe and Premium?
The forms. Both tiers use the same interview, the same accuracy guarantee and the same e-file. What changes is which schedules the software will let you complete. We read the forms table on Intuit's Deluxe and Premium product pages in October 2026, and this is how it splits.
| Form or situation | Deluxe, $79 | Premium, $139 |
|---|---|---|
| W-2 wages, interest, dividends (Schedule B) | Yes | Yes |
| Itemized deductions (Schedule A), mortgage interest, charity | Yes | Yes |
| HSA (Form 8889) and marketplace insurance (Form 8962) | Yes | Yes |
| 1099-NEC, 1099-K and 1099-MISC income, Schedule SE | Yes | Yes |
| Schedule C, profit or loss from business | Income only | Entire schedule, with expenses |
| Home office (Form 8829) | No | Yes |
| Stock and crypto sales (Schedule D, Form 8949, 1099-B) | No | Yes |
| Rental property (Schedule E) | No | Yes |
| Sale of business property (Form 4797) | No | Yes |
The row that matters most is Schedule C. Deluxe accepts the income on a 1099-NEC and computes self-employment tax on it, so it can look like it handles freelance work. It does not let you enter the business expenses that bring that income down. A freelancer who files on Deluxe either upgrades halfway through the return or pays 15.3 percent self-employment tax on gross receipts.
Who should buy TurboTax Deluxe?
Deluxe fits a household that is all W-2 and wants to itemize or claim credits outside the narrow Free Edition. Think of a couple with two W-2s, a mortgage, property tax, charitable gifts, an HSA and maybe a 1098-T for college tuition. Nothing in that return needs Schedule C expenses, capital gains or rental income, and Deluxe at $79 plus state is the cheapest TurboTax tier that covers it.
It also works for someone with a tiny amount of 1099 income and no costs at all, such as $400 for judging a contest, but that is a narrow case. If you had a single deductible expense, even software or mileage, you are a Premium filer.
Who needs TurboTax Premium?
- Freelancers, contractors and gig workers with any expenses to deduct, which is nearly all of them. Intuit folded the old TurboTax Self-Employed product into Premium, so there is no separate self-employed tier to look for anymore.
- Anyone who sold stock, funds or crypto. A 1099-B or a crypto exchange statement means Schedule D and Form 8949.
- Landlords, including a single room rented out or a former home now leased, because rental income goes on Schedule E.
- Owner-operators and drivers who depreciate a vehicle and track mileage or per diem. Our truck driver tax deductions page shows how much of that return lives on Schedule C.
How much do TurboTax Deluxe and Premium really cost with a state?
The headline prices are federal only. Intuit prints "State additional" next to both, and the state fee is charged per state. Intuit's own community answers put a single state at $39 in late January 2026, and reviews later in the season quoted $64, because TurboTax raises prices as April gets closer. Here is what that does to the total for one state.
| Your return | TurboTax tier | Federal plus one state | TaxFile |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-2 household that itemizes | Deluxe | $118 to $143 | $39, state included |
| W-2 plus a 1099 side gig with expenses | Premium | $178 to $203 | $89, state included |
| Full-time freelancer working in two states | Premium | $217 to $267 | $199, all states included |
| Stock or crypto sales, or a rental property | Premium | $178 to $203 | Not supported, buy Premium |
The last row is the honest one. TaxFile prepares W-2, 1099 and Schedule C returns and does not handle capital gains or rental income, so if your year includes a brokerage 1099-B or a tenant, Premium is the right purchase. The full tier list, including Expert Assist and Full Service, is in our TurboTax pricing breakdown.
Is TurboTax Premium worth it over Deluxe?
For a self-employed filer, yes, and it is not close. Take a designer with $40,000 of 1099-NEC income and $6,000 of software, equipment and a home office. On Deluxe those expenses have nowhere to go. On Premium they cut the profit to $34,000, which saves about $848 in self-employment tax alone (15.3 percent of 92.35 percent of $6,000) before counting a cent of income tax. Paying $60 more to save $847 is an easy trade.
The better question is whether TurboTax is worth it at all for that return. It is a single Schedule C. The interview is polished, but the forms are the same ones every self-employed product prepares, and the difference between $178 and $89 pays for a year of the business software you are deducting. Keep the expenses organized as you go: if your costs are buried in PDF bank statements, you can pull the transactions into a spreadsheet and sort them by category in one pass instead of retyping a year of charges.
Can I upgrade from TurboTax Deluxe to Premium later?
Yes. TurboTax online charges when you file, not when you start, so you can begin in Deluxe and the software will prompt an upgrade the moment you open a form Deluxe does not cover, such as business expenses or a 1099-B. Going the other way is harder. To drop back from Premium to Deluxe you have to delete every form that requires Premium first, and a leftover worksheet can keep you on the higher price.
That billing model is also why people end up surprised at checkout. The price you saw on the product page assumed the tier you clicked, not the tier your return needed. If you want a fixed number up front, our TurboTax self-employed cost article walks through every add-on that lands at the end.
What is cheaper than TurboTax Premium for self-employed returns?
For a current-year return with W-2s, 1099s and a Schedule C in one state, TaxFile's Schedule C software files federal and state for $89 a year. It reads your W-2s and 1099s, sweeps for the deductions your kind of work usually carries, explains each figure in plain English and files after you approve. Cash App Taxes is genuinely free and supports Schedule C, but it cannot file more than one state or a part-year return and you have to sign in through the mobile app. Our TurboTax alternative comparison lays out the rest of the field with prices.
TurboTax Deluxe vs Premium questions
Does TurboTax Deluxe include self-employment?
Only the income. Deluxe accepts 1099-NEC, 1099-K and 1099-MISC income and computes self-employment tax on Schedule SE, but its forms table lists Schedule C as "income only". You cannot enter business expenses, so anyone with costs to deduct needs Premium at $139 federal.
Does TurboTax Deluxe cover crypto and stocks?
No. Schedule D, Form 8949 and Form 1099-B appear only in the Premium column of Intuit's forms table. Selling shares, funds or cryptocurrency during the year moves you to Premium, even if the gain was small or you had a loss.
Is TurboTax Premium the same as TurboTax Self-Employed?
Effectively, yes. Intuit merged the old Self-Employed edition into Premium, which now covers the full Schedule C along with investments and rentals. If an older guide tells you to buy TurboTax Self-Employed, the product to look for today is Premium.
Is TurboTax Deluxe worth it for W-2 only?
It is worth it if you itemize or claim credits that Free Edition excludes. Free Edition covers simple Form 1040 returns only, and Intuit says about 37 percent of filers qualify. If you take the standard deduction and have no extra schedules, check whether you qualify for the free tier before paying $79.
