For a single-member LLC, TurboTax files the business inside your personal return, and the tier you need is Premium at $139 federal plus state, because it is the tier with the full Schedule C. A multi-member LLC or an LLC taxed as an S corporation needs a separate business return (Form 1065 or 1120-S), which TurboTax sells through Expert Assist Business at $639 or a Windows-only desktop product, and you still buy a personal edition on top. If your LLC has one owner and no election, TaxFile files the same Schedule C return for $89 with one state included.
Which TurboTax do I need for an LLC?
Start with how the IRS classifies your LLC, because TurboTax sells a different product for each classification. Your LLC does not pick the software; its tax treatment does.
| Your LLC | Return it files | TurboTax product |
|---|---|---|
| Single member, no election | Schedule C on your Form 1040 | Premium online, $139 + state |
| Single member, you want an expert on call | Schedule C on your Form 1040 | Expert Assist Business for sole proprietors, $229 + state |
| Multi-member, taxed as a partnership | Form 1065 plus a K-1 per member | Expert Assist Business, $639, or Desktop Business (Windows) |
| Elected S corporation | Form 1120-S plus a K-1 per shareholder | Expert Assist Business, $639, or Desktop Business (Windows) |
| Any of the above, done for you | Same forms | Expert Full Service Business, $1,549 for an S corp or partnership |
Prices are Intuit's listed figures for tax year 2025 from its small business and Premium pages. Intuit runs "file by" discounts early in the season and charges for each state return separately. The full tier list is in our TurboTax pricing breakdown.
Deluxe is the trap. It looks like the obvious middle option, but Intuit's own forms table shows Deluxe covering only the income portion of a self-employed return. The expense side of Schedule C, which is the whole point of running a business, is in Premium. The old TurboTax Self-Employed product no longer exists as a separate tier; it was folded into Premium, so a guide that tells you to buy "Self-Employed" is describing something you will not find on the site.
Does TurboTax Premium work for a single-member LLC?
Yes. A single-member LLC with no election is a disregarded entity, so the IRS sees your business as part of you. There is no separate federal income tax return for it. Premium walks you through Schedule C, calculates self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and applies the 20 percent qualified business income deduction. In TurboTax's interview you will mostly see the word "sole proprietor", and that is correct for your LLC too.
What Premium does not do is anything the state wants from the LLC as an entity. California, for example, charges LLCs an $800 annual tax filed on Form 568, separate from your personal state return. Check your state's LLC filing before assuming the personal return covers everything. Our LLC tax filing page lists the federal forms and deadlines for every LLC type in one table.
Can TurboTax file a multi-member LLC return?
Yes, but not online and not cheaply. A multi-member LLC files Form 1065, and TurboTax's online personal products cannot prepare it. Your two routes are Expert Assist Business at $639, where you prepare the partnership return with an expert available, or TurboTax Desktop Business, a download that runs on Windows only. Desktop Business prepares the 1065 and the K-1s but cannot prepare anyone's personal Form 1040, so each member then needs a personal edition as well.
That makes a two-member LLC more expensive in TurboTax than most owners expect: the partnership return, plus Premium for each member who has other self-employment income, plus state returns for the partnership and for each member. Run the numbers before the season rather than in March, because the partnership return is due first: March 16, 2026 for tax year 2025, since March 15 fell on a Sunday.
What an LLC owner actually pays at TurboTax
| Owner | TurboTax at list price | TaxFile |
|---|---|---|
| Single-member LLC, consultant, one state | Premium $139 + state, about $178 to $203 | $89, state included |
| Single-member LLC with a vehicle and equipment to depreciate | Premium $139 + state | $199 Business plan, depreciation and Section 179 |
| Single-member LLC working in two states | Premium $139 + two state returns | $199 Business plan, multiple states |
| Member of a two-member LLC (your share only) | Your personal edition + state, after the $639 partnership return | $89 or $199 for your personal return with the K-1; the 1065 is prepared elsewhere |
The honest summary: for a single-member LLC, TurboTax Premium works and costs about twice what TaxFile does. For a partnership or S corporation return, TaxFile does not prepare the entity return at all, and TurboTax Expert Assist Business or a CPA is the right buy for that piece. The 2025 NATP fee study puts the average minimum fee for a business return at $634, which makes Intuit's $639 a fair market price rather than a bargain.
Where TurboTax trips LLC owners up
The software is fine. The mistakes come from how LLC owners use it.
- Buying Deluxe to save $60. You either upgrade mid-return at full price or file without expenses, which overstates profit and the 15.3 percent self-employment tax on it.
- Paying yourself and deducting it. In a single-member LLC, transfers from the business account to your personal account are draws, not wages. They are not an expense on Schedule C. Owners who enter them as "payroll" understate profit, and that is the kind of error that draws a letter.
- Missing income that was billed but not paid. Most small LLCs report on the cash method, so income counts in the year the client pays, not the year you invoice. A December invoice paid in January is next year's income. If late payers are routine for you, a tool that chases unpaid invoices by email and text shortens that gap and makes the year-end cut-off far easier to reconcile.
- Skipping quarterly estimates. No one withholds tax from LLC profit. The 2026 payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027, and our estimated tax calculator sizes each one.
Is TurboTax worth it for an LLC?
For a single-member LLC, it is a good product at a high price. If you value the TurboTax interview and the brand, Premium does the job. If your return is a current-year Schedule C in one state, you are paying roughly $90 to $115 more than you need to. For a multi-member LLC or S corporation, TurboTax is one of the few self-service ways to prepare the entity return at all, and that is where its business products earn their price.
Compare it with the rest of the category in best tax software for small business, or go straight to the Schedule C software page if a single-member LLC is all you file.
TurboTax for LLC questions
Can I use TurboTax for my LLC?
Yes. A single-member LLC files inside your personal return with TurboTax Premium, which includes the full Schedule C, at $139 federal plus state. A multi-member LLC or an LLC taxed as an S corporation needs a business return, which TurboTax handles through Expert Assist Business at $639 or its Windows desktop Business product.
Does TurboTax Deluxe work for an LLC?
Only partly. Intuit's forms table shows Deluxe covering the income portion of a self-employed return, not the expense side of Schedule C. An LLC owner with any business expenses needs Premium, at $139 federal plus state, or will understate deductions and overpay self-employment tax.
Do I need TurboTax Business for a single-member LLC?
No. TurboTax Business is for entities that file their own return, such as partnerships and S corporations, and it cannot prepare a personal Form 1040. A single-member LLC with no election reports on Schedule C of your 1040, which TurboTax Premium handles.
What is cheaper than TurboTax for an LLC?
For a single-member LLC in one state, TaxFile files the full Schedule C return for $89 a year with the state included, against about $178 to $203 for TurboTax Premium with a state. Cash App Taxes is free and supports Schedule C but cannot file multiple states.
