AI tax preparation, AI tax software and AI tax filing
Tax preparation has always been tedious: gather the forms, decode the questions, transcribe numbers, and hope nothing was missed. AI can take that grind off your plate, but only if it explains its work and never files anything without your say-so. The point is to remove the busywork, not to hand off control of your own return.
TaxFile uses AI to prepare your return from your W-2s and 1099s, reading your forms, filling the right lines, and finding the deductions and credits you qualify for. Every entry comes with a plain explanation, and an error check flags anything that looks off. You review the complete return, and only after you approve does TaxFile e-file through an authorized IRS e-file provider. TaxFile is self-prepared tax software, not personalized tax advice. Review your return before filing, and consult a CPA for complex situations.

The short answer
AI tax preparation is tax software that reads your W-2s, 1099s and receipts, places every figure on the right line of the return, checks which deductions and credits your situation qualifies for, and runs a consistency check before a human approves and files it. The part that is genuinely automated is document handling and eligibility checking, which is where self-prepared returns actually go wrong. The part that is not automated, and should not be, is the signature: whoever signs a return is responsible for it to the IRS, so any tool that files without showing you the finished return first is handing you a liability. TaxFile prices a self-employed return at $89, with your state return included, against $139 plus state for the equivalent TurboTax tier and an average of $228 to $280 for a credentialed preparer.

Why it works
What you get with ai tax preparation
AI does the busywork
Reading forms, filling lines, and checking deductions are handled by AI, so you skip the transcription grind and start from a drafted return.
Explains every entry
Each line the AI fills comes with a plain reason, so the return is transparent and you understand it rather than trusting a black box.
You stay in control
Nothing files automatically. The AI prepares and explains, and you review and approve before it e-files through an authorized provider.
What it handles
Prepared, checked and ready to review
TaxFile reads your W-2s, 1099s and receipts, classifies your income, finds the deductions and credits you qualify for, runs an error and audit-risk check, and assembles a return you review and approve before filing.
- Reads W-2s and 1099s and drafts your return
- Finds deductions and credits you qualify for
- Explains every entry in plain language
- Runs an error check before submission
- E-files through an authorized IRS e-file provider after you approve
Why TaxFile
One place to prepare, check and file your return
Not a 90-screen interview, not an expensive preparer, and not bare DIY forms. Upload or chat, find your deductions, run the error check, and review before filing, all in one place.
Reads your documents
Upload your W-2s, 1099s and receipts or just answer a few questions. TaxFile reads everything, classifies your income, and fills the forms, so you skip the long interview the old software puts you through.
Finds your deductions
Built for 1099 and Schedule C income, TaxFile surfaces the write-offs and credits you qualify for, each with the dollar amount and a plain-English reason, so you claim what is yours.
Checks before you file
An automated error, consistency and audit-risk check runs over your whole return. You review every figure and approve it, and it is e-filed through an authorized IRS e-file provider only when you say so.
What can software process on a tax form automatically?
More than most people assume, and less than the marketing suggests. The honest split is worth knowing before you pick a tool, because it tells you where to spend your own attention.
| Task | Automated well | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reading boxes off a W-2 or 1099 | Yes | Fixed layouts and labelled boxes. This is the single biggest source of self-prepared errors and the easiest thing to remove |
| Placing figures on the right line | Yes | The mapping from box to form line is deterministic once the document type is known |
| Checking deduction and credit eligibility | Yes | Eligibility is a set of rules applied to numbers you have already entered, so it can be checked exhaustively rather than sampled by memory |
| Internal consistency and error checks | Yes | Totals that do not agree, a Schedule C with revenue and no expenses, a dependent claimed twice |
| Classifying your business expenses | Partly | It can propose categories from a description, but only you know whether a laptop is 100 percent business |
| Deciding contested positions | No | Whether a room qualifies as regular and exclusive use, or whether an activity is a business or a hobby, is judgement rather than data entry |
| Signing and taking responsibility | No | The person who signs the return answers for it. That cannot be delegated to software, and a tool that files unattended is transferring risk to you silently |
The rows marked yes are the ones that eat an evening and cause the mistakes. The rows marked no are the ones worth your attention, and a return that arrives already drafted lets you spend your attention there instead of on transcription.
AI tax preparation compared with the alternatives
Three routes exist for a return with self-employment income, and the price gap between them is larger than the capability gap for most filers.
| Route | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| TaxFile, self-employed tier | $89 federal, with your state return included | A 1099 or Schedule C return where you want the transcription and the deduction sweep done and still want to read every line |
| Interview-style software (TurboTax Premium) | $139 federal, state additional | Filers who want the established brand and do not mind clicking through the long questionnaire |
| Assisted or expert tiers | $89 to $209 federal, state additional | A specific question you want a person to answer while you still do the work |
| Enrolled agent | $228 average for a 1040 with schedules 1 to 3 | Anyone who may need representation before the IRS. Enrolled agents have unlimited representation rights |
| CPA | $280 average, plus $123 to $135 for a Schedule C | Entity questions, an S corporation election, or a return complex enough that the fee is the cheap part |
Preparer fees come from the 2025 National Association of Tax Professionals fee study, and 54 percent of preparers in it charge extra again for the state return. TurboTax figures are Intuit's own anticipated undiscounted prices for tax year 2025 and were verified on their pricing pages; early-season promotions run below them. The tax preparation fees page has the full fee breakdown, and the TurboTax comparison goes tier by tier.
One line worth reading twice: paying more does not buy you a licence. The IRS states that anyone can be a paid tax return preparer as long as they have a Preparer Tax Identification Number, with no exam and no continuing education behind a bare PTIN, and a PTIN-only preparer has had no representation rights since 2016. The credential comparison covers what each one can actually do for you.
The label AI tax software covers three quite different products in 2026: deduction finders that read your bank transactions, filing tools that read your documents and draft the return, and firm-side automation sold to accounting practices rather than to you. Buying the wrong one of the three is the expensive mistake, and the AI tax software comparison sets out which category fits which filer with the verified 2026 prices.
Where AI tax preparation is the wrong tool
Being specific about this is more useful than a disclaimer. TaxFile does not currently handle capital gains on Schedule D, rental income on Schedule E, or cryptocurrency transactions, and it does not e-file Form 4868 extensions or prepare amended returns. If your year includes any of those, you want a different route and it is better to know now than three screens in.
Beyond the feature list, some situations are judgement problems rather than preparation problems. A business that has lost money for several years running raises a hobby-loss question. Income earned across several states, or worked remotely from one state for an employer in another, turns on residency and sourcing rules that vary and interact, which is why multi-state filing and the convenience of the employer rule get their own treatment. An IRS letter already in your hands is a representation matter, not a filing one.
For everything else, the ordinary case is genuinely well served: forms read accurately, deductions checked exhaustively rather than from memory, arithmetic that ties out, and a finished return you read before it goes. Whether AI can do your taxes covers the question in more depth, and automated tax filing describes the pipeline end to end.
TaxFile is self-prepared tax software and does not provide personalized tax, legal or accounting advice. Human review before filing is required, nothing is ever filed silently, and no refund or refund amount is guaranteed.
